Canada Allows the Use of Steviol Glycosides from Yarrowia Lipolytica

The Health Canada Food Directorate recently enabled the use of steviol glycosides from Yarrowia lipolytica, a non-pathogenic yeast species, in a variety of standardized and unstandardized foods. The same maximum use level as that of traditional steviol glycosides applies. The new SG can be used in a variety of food and beverages and also has approval for use as a tabletop sweetener. Health Canada reviewed information related to allergenicity, safety, microbiology, nutrition, and toxicology and concluded that steviol glycosides from Yarrowia lipolytica poses no health concerns.
