A congressional report issued earlier this month highlighted the presence of heavy metals in baby food.  The report underlines the need for FDA to set upper limits for lead, mercury, and other metals in infant foods.  The FDA has not set thresholds for most metals in baby foods.  Recently, a 100ppb threshold for arsenic in infant rice cereals was finalized by the Agency.  California Proposition 65 legislation has established limits for many metals regardless of end use product.  It is expected that litigation will be filed as a result of the report, although baby food producers defend their safety and procurement protocols.
