Draft China Food Labelling Updates

Recently China’s National Health Commission (NHC) notified the World Trade Organization of the draft “National Food Safety Standard General Rules for Nutrition Labeling of Prepackaged Foods”.  The draft regulation outlines new requirements for finished foods labeling including the definition of nutrients, calculation of nutrient values for key nutrients and functional nutrient claims. There are some exemptions to the new standard including single raw or dried products that are simply processed such as rice or grain, bulk foods, packaged drinking water, and alcoholic beverages in which alcohol content does not exceed 0.5% and sugar content does not exceed 0.5%.  This standard will replace GB 28050-2011.
