FDA Sweetener Labeling Changes May Be Coming

On October 16, the US FDA requested additional information on sugars such as D-tagatose and isomaltulose that are metabolized differently than traditional sugar.  Such information could eventually cause the FDA to change the way sugars are labeled on the Nutrition Facts Label that would make sugar reduction easier to achieve.  This supports food and beverage manufacturers’ desire to reformulate with less sugar while still meeting consumer preference. The FDA also stated that allulose does not count as sugar or as added sugar on the Nutrition Facts Label.  Allulose is a monosaccharide that found in small amounts in wheat, fruits, and other foods.  It has about 70% of the sweetness of sucrose.
