Earlier this month FDA finalized guidance that will reduce infants’ exposure to inorganic arsenic which is associated with neurodevelopmental effects.  The guidance specifies an action level of 100ppb inorganic arsenic in infant rice cereal which reduces dietary exposure to this contaminant.

This level is believed to be achievable by industry, and manufacturers are already making progress in reducing arsenic levels in rice and rice cereal.  The new guidance, which is provided by the Toxic Elements Working Group, also describes the FDA’s sampling and enforcement approach.
