FSSAI Draft Notification on Food Safety and Standards

Recently the FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority) of India released a draft notification on Food Safety and Standards Amendment Regulations including a revision of the definitions for caloric and non-caloric sweeteners.  Under the new regulations, sweeteners will be classified broadly as either caloric or non-caloric sweeteners.  Caloric sweeteners are defined as substances having greater than 2 percent of the caloric value of sucrose per equivalent unit of sweetening capacity.  This list of caloric: sweeteners includes:  sorbitol, mannitol, thaumatin, and maltitol.  Non-caloric sweeteners are defined as substances having less than 2 percent of the caloric value of sucrose per equivalent unit of sweetening capacity.  This list includes:  erythritol, steviol glycoside, aspartame, and sucralose.
