Inspector Meerkat: Turmeric Fraud

Inspector Meerkat here checking in with this week’s Food Fraud Investigation, focusing on fraud in turmeric exploring data from Decernis’ Food Fraud Database.

There are 22 incident records involving turmeric in the last ten years in the Food Fraud Database, with the majority of incidents involving turmeric from India. Incident records are documented occurrences of food fraud that include contextual information. The reasons for adulteration in turmeric include dilution or substitution with an alternative substance or ingredient, misrepresentation of botanical origin, and artificial enhancement of perceived quality with color additives.
