Oklahoma Battle Over Plant-Based Meat Products

Oklahoma’s new Meat Consumer Protection Act is due to take effect on November 1 and is garnering legal action from at least one plant-based meat manufacturer.  The new law which was supported by the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association permits plant-based products to use descriptive “meaty” terms on their labels such as meat, bacon, beef, etc.  However, the products are also required to display a prominent disclaimer stating that the product is plant-based.  The disclaimer must be in a type size that is at least equivalent to that of the product name, and this is a major issue for the Plant Based Foods Association (PBFA) who believes there is no reason for this oversized warning and that it creates confusion.  If the law actually goes into effect, it is likely that some PBFA members may withdraw products for sale in the state.
