Recycled Plastics Regulation European Commission Update

Legislation on recycled plastic intended for contact with food sold in markets has been in place since 2008. In addition, there is information showing that such metals also transfer from vitreous FCMs. A revision of the overall EU legislation on FCMs was announced in May 2020 as part of the European Commission’s Farm to Fork Strategy for a fair, healthy and environmentally friendly food system. Further information may be found concerning ongoing and future planned amendments via presentations made available on the FCM Document Library. A link to the amendments that are adopted and published in the Official Journal can be found on the Legislation page.

IMPACT STATEMENT The Commission will introduce an amendment to Regulation 282/2008 in 2021. This amendment is meant to clarify the requirements for production and use of recycled resins, other than PET. The amendment could help to increase the amount of available recycled resin used in food contact articles. These clarifications will allow converters and users of recycled food contact articles to have the confidence they are meeting all safety requirements set forth in the regulations.
