Regulation of Diisocyanites in the EU for Food Contact

On August 3, 2020, the European Commission (EC) passed Regulation (EU) 2020/1149, “Commission Regulation (EU) 2020/1149 of 3 August 2020 amending Annex XVII to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) as regards diisocyanates.” This amendment of  EU’s REACH regulation will restrict the use and placing on the market of diisocyanates. The substances are widely used in industrial applications, however, multiple diisocyanates are also included in EU’s “Plastics Regulation”, EU Reg. No. 10/2011 Annex I, as well as in the FACET inventory of food contact materials.
