Sesame to be labeled as allergen on packaged food starting 1 January 2023

A significant number of Americans, altogether 85 millions, suffer from food allergies, and nearly 1.6 million are allergic to sesame. Proper labelling of packaged foods is crucial for allergy sufferers in order to avoid allergens. On April 23, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the FASTER Act for Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education and Research into law. Sesame often shows up as “natural spices” on a label, but starting on 1 January 2023 would have to be explicitly mentioned on a food packaging label, making it the 9th allergen that requires plain language labelling.
