Trial Finds Beet Juice Reduces Blood Pressure

A double-blind feasibility study conducted in Africa finds that beetroot juice reduces blood pressure in hypertensive adults. Africa has a hypertension epidemic and is looking to the nitrates found in beet juice to offer dietary intervention. Inorganic nitrate and folic acid supplementation have attracted interest as nutritional antihypertensive agents for several years, and beets are rich in inorganic nitrates. The study done in Africa was small but yielded similar outcomes to other studies done in this area. Additional research is needed, but this type of study may open the door for a claim made around beetroot juice and its reduction of hypertension.
