UK Meat Sector Granted Third Country Status

The continued export of meat, fish, and dairy from the UK into the rest of Europe has been confirmed, but many details are yet to be addressed which is a hindrance to Brexit preparations. In late December, the UK secured ‘national listed status’, and it was announced by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) third country status means live animals and products of animal origin such as meat and dairy can continue to be exported to Europe. Third country status was confirmed after the UK met the health and biosecurity requirements as set forth by the EU for third country classification. There are still some gaps to be addressed such as the need for trichinella testing and other information for the Export Health Certificates. Additional details are expected in January, and UK farmers and processors are hoping there will no major issues so that the UK is prepared for the export of meat, fish, and dairy products.
