Mandatory Food Recycling to Begin in California

Starting in January, food waste like banana peels, chicken bones, and leftover vegetables won’t be allowed in most California trash bins per a mandatory food recycling program. The program aims to reduce greenhouse emissions from landfills. It is estimated that Californians throw away nearly 6 million tons of food waste annually. Around 18 percent of this ends up in landfills. California has been working to reduce food waste since 2002 and offers workshops on food waste prevention, composting and recycling. It is not clear yet how enforcement of the mandatory food recycling program will be implemented.
